Scoliosis Treatment | Scoliosis symptoms and Causes

ScoliosisScoliosis is the presence of an abnormal curve in the spine. Though there is no permanent scoliosis treatment, with proper care and other measures, it can be reduced to a great extent.

Who Are At Risk?

Scoliosis can happen to you at any age. However, the age group of 9-15 are seen most affected by this disorder, and girls are affected more than boys of the same age.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

The symptoms of scoliosis are:

  • Head not at the right center

  • One hip visibly prominent than the other

  • Asymmetrical ribcage or ribcage at different heights

  • Clothes that do not hang on the body perfectly

  • Legs not even

  • Tendency to lean to one side

Causes of Scoliosis

There could be multiple reasons for this condition, although we are not certain to as what exactly causes scoliosis yet. Here are the possible causes that could lead to an abnormal curve in the spine:

  • Defect by birth: Some babies are born with this disorder. This kind of scoliosis is often severe than the development of the disorder at a later stage.

  • Family history: If you have a family history of the disorder or if any of your close relatives suffer from scoliosis, it is more likely that you have chances of getting affected sooner or later.

  • Infections in spine: Infections or injuries in the spine can lead to scoliosis.

Treatment of Scoliosis

The treatment of scoliosis is done differently for infants, children, and adults. Let us discuss some common practices followed by some treatment suggestions for scoliosis.

  • Exercises: The exercises suggested by different doctors may vary. Though exercises help reduce the abnormality, it is it not quite certain if this method is the most effective.

  • Surgery: In severe cases, doctors suggest surgery to correct the curve of the back bone. Once the surgery is done, kids generally take 4-6 weeks to get back to their daily routine. Adults, especially sports persons, take up to a year to recover. In certain cases, a back brace may be required for some time after the surgery is done.

  • Brace: In children, bracing is suggested by doctors if the curve is getting worse as the child grows. This may not necessarily help in reducing the curve, but may stop the spinal curve from worsening.

  • Casting: In very young children, using a cast may help in reducing the curve as they grow. A cast is a brace that is changed in 2-3 months’ time as the child grows.

  • Chiropractic: A skilled chiropractor can help you with corrective measures so that you can ensure that the condition does not worsen in the future.
